Talc is a silicate mineral distinguished by its extreme softness, setting it apart from nearly all other minerals. Its characteristic soapy or greasy feel is the origin of the name ‘soapstone.’

Talc finds use across a wide range of applications, serving as a filler in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food-grade products, paper, roofing materials, plastics, and rubber. It is available in various specifications based on grain size, currently ranging from 400–500 mesh and with brightness levels reaching up to 95 (DIN53163).

Properties of Talc

Softness

Talc is the softest mineral, defined at 1 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Its colour ranges from white to grey or pale green, and it commonly exhibits a pearly lustre.

Feel

Talc exhibits a greasy to soapy tactile property, a feature that supports its application in personal care formulations such as powders.

Structure

Talc’s unique layered structure—built from sheets of magnesium oxide and silica—allows the layers to slip smoothly, giving the mineral its soft feel.

Chemical Composition

At its core, talc is made up of hydrated magnesium silicate, known scientifically by the formula Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂.

Heat Resistance

With its strong resistance to heat, talc is often used in materials designed to withstand high temperatures.

> From 325-800 mesh size for Ultra fine Talcum Powder, used for face powders, blush, foundations, eye shadows, body powders, dry shampoo, scalp absorbents, and deodorants, with less than 45 microns.

> We recommend using mesh size 200-325 for fine Talcum Powder used for baby powder & medicated body powders, Talc-based body lotions & skin protectants, foot powders & anti-chafing products, with a 45-75 micron size.

> For Pharmaceuticals, we recommend using a mesh size of 200-500, a fine talcum powder suitable for blending and coating, with a particle size of less than 45 microns. Used for applications such as lubricants & anti-caking agents in pill/tablet compression, powdered excipients for medicinal formulations, and Talc-based dusting powders for wound treatment.
